NOAA space weather alerts: what outlooks, watches, warnings, and G-scale numbers mean

A geomagnetic-storm watch, a G-scale number, and an aurora forecast are related, but they do not promise the same event or answer the same question. This guide explains how NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center describes what may happen, what is expected soon, what has been observed, and whether a northern-lights trip makes sense after local weather is considered.

This is a reading guide, not a current space-weather alert: NOAA conditions and bulletins can change quickly. Check the newest Space Weather Prediction Center product before making a decision. For outdoor plans, also check your exact local forecast and every active NWS warning; a clear aurora forecast does not make thunderstorms, fog, winter weather, cold, or unsafe roads disappear.

The product name changes the meaning

An outlook, forecast, watch, warning, and alert are not interchangeable

NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, or SWPC, issues bulletins for geomagnetic storms, solar radiation storms, and radio blackouts. Read the product name before the scale number. It tells you whether the information is a longer-range planning signal, a forecast, an expected near-term event, or an observed threshold.

Outlook
A longer-range planning view of possible activity. An outlook is useful for awareness, but uncertainty grows with lead time. It is not proof that a storm or visible aurora will occur at your location.
Forecast
A prediction for a defined period. SWPC's 3-Day Forecast summarizes recently observed conditions and the forecast for the G, S, and R categories, with a short forecaster explanation. Forecast values can change as new solar and solar-wind observations arrive.
Watch
Advance notice that SWPC predicts a space-weather threshold may be reached. A watch gives operators and the public time to monitor updates. It is not confirmation that the event is already occurring.
Warning
Shorter-lead notice that a threshold is expected soon based on the newest observations and forecast. Read the stated event type, level, start time, end time, and later updates; do not treat the word alone as a local surface-weather warning.
Alert
Notice that an observed space-weather threshold has been reached. An alert confirms the measured event category, but the possible effects still depend on the G, S, or R scale, the event's duration, location, and the system involved.

Three scales, not one

G, S, and R describe different kinds of space weather

NOAA's numbered scales run from 1 to 5, but the letter is essential. A G2 geomagnetic storm is not the same phenomenon as an S2 solar radiation storm or an R2 radio blackout. The number communicates severity within that one category—not a universal danger level for every person and device.

G1–G5: geomagnetic storms
Disturbances in Earth's magnetic field. Possible effects increase with the scale and can involve power systems, spacecraft operations, satellite navigation, high-frequency radio, and aurora at lower latitudes during stronger events.
S1–S5: solar radiation storms
Elevated energetic particles. Higher levels matter especially to astronauts, high-latitude aviation, satellites, polar HF communication, and navigation. The S scale is not an aurora brightness scale.
R1–R5: radio blackouts
X-ray events that can degrade or block high-frequency radio and affect some navigation signals on the sunlit side of Earth. An R alert does not automatically mean a household internet, cellular, or electrical outage.

The scale pages list possible effects, physical measurements, and average frequency. Read the row for the exact letter and number instead of sharing a headline that says only “level 4” or “severe solar storm.”

For northern-lights planning

A geomagnetic-storm forecast does not guarantee visible aurora

Aurora visibility needs several things to line up: geomagnetic activity, enough darkness, a favorable viewing location, clear sky, and a view away from bright lights. NOAA's OVATION product is a short-term model of aurora location and intensity, not a promise that a person at a specific address will see it.

  • Use the SWPC watch or forecast for advance awareness, then return for updates as the possible event approaches.
  • Use the NOAA 30-minute aurora forecast close to viewing time. SWPC says the product provides roughly 30 to 90 minutes of forecast lead when its upstream solar-wind input is available.
  • Check the map timestamp, hemisphere, forecast oval, and the day-night shading. Aurora cannot be seen in daylight.
  • Check the local hourly forecast for clouds, precipitation, visibility, wind, and temperature. Space-weather data does not forecast the sky between you and the aurora.
  • Choose a legal viewing place before leaving. Do not stop on a highway shoulder, trespass, or remain outside during a local thunderstorm, high-wind, winter-storm, or other warning.

Read a bulletin in one minute

Use this order before reacting to a space-weather headline

  1. Confirm the source. Open NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, not a screenshot or repost with the issue time removed.
  2. Read the product name. Decide whether it is an outlook, forecast, watch, warning, or alert.
  3. Read the letter and number together. G, S, and R identify different event types; 1 through 5 show the level within that type.
  4. Check issue and valid times. SWPC products use Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC. Confirm the correct local date before planning.
  5. Match the product to your decision. Aurora viewers need the aurora forecast and local sky conditions. Power, satellite, aviation, radio, and emergency-management professionals should follow their organization's operating procedures and the SWPC guidance for their sector.
  6. Check again. A watch can be revised, a warning can change level or timing, and an alert describes an observed threshold that may rise or fall afterward.

Keep ordinary emergency supplies, communication backups, and official local alerts available for all hazards. People who operate power, aviation, satellite, GPS, or HF-radio systems need sector-specific procedures beyond this public guide.
