UV Index forecast or UV Alert: when clouds still need sun protection

The UV Index is a daily forecast of expected ultraviolet radiation, not a temperature reading and not a weather warning. Use it with the local weather forecast and active alerts to decide when shade, clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen belong in the plan—even when the sky is not perfectly clear.

This is an evergreen planning guide, not a current alert: check today's UV Index, your local NWS forecast, and active warnings before heading outside. The Index describes expected UV exposure risk; it does not replace warnings for heat, thunderstorms, or other weather hazards.

Start with the product name

A UV forecast, UV Alert, outlook, watch, and warning are not interchangeable

EPA says the National Weather Service calculates the UV Index forecast for most U.S. ZIP codes and EPA publishes it. The Index predicts expected UV intensity and overexposure risk on a scale that runs from low values to 11 or more. Read it as a planning forecast, then check separate weather products for other hazards.

UV Index forecast
Predicts the expected intensity of solar UV radiation for a place and day. EPA's forecast maps show predicted values near solar noon and include Day 1 through Day 4 guidance.
UV Alert
EPA's notification for unusually intense UV compared with what is normal for that locality and date. EPA says it is issued when the forecast Index is at least 6 and statistically higher than normal.
Weather outlook
Describes broader potential over a longer period or larger area. It helps with early planning but is not a location's hour-by-hour UV forecast or a call to take warning action.
Weather forecast
Describes expected local conditions such as clouds, temperature, wind, and rain. Combine it with the UV Index to plan both comfort and sun protection.
Watch or warning
An official hazard message for conditions such as extreme heat or severe storms. A UV Alert is not an NWS watch or warning. If a weather warning covers your location, follow its instructions first.

1–11+

Turn the number into a decision

The scale changes how much protection belongs in the plan

EPA's current guidance groups the Index into practical action bands. The number is not a countdown to a burn and it is not a measure of how hot the air feels. It is a forecast of the UV exposure hazard.

1–2Low

EPA says minimal protection is generally sufficient. Sunglasses and situation-specific protection still make sense.

3–7Moderate to high

Protection is needed: seek shade during late morning through mid-afternoon and use protective clothing, a hat, sunglasses, and broad-spectrum sunscreen.

8+Very high to extreme

Extra protection is needed. Limit exposure around the strongest part of the day and make shade and protective gear part of the plan.

11+Extreme end of the scale

Do not treat 11+ as the top of the physical range; it is the open-ended extreme category on the public scale.

EPA's Shadow Rule offers a quick field check: when your shadow is shorter than you are, UV exposure is likely higher. Use that cue to seek shade and protect skin and eyes, while still relying on the official forecast for planning.

Cloudy does not mean zero UV

The forecast already considers clouds, but conditions can still require protection

The NWS calculation uses forecast stratospheric ozone, forecast cloud amounts, and elevation. Clouds reduce UV reaching the ground, but the amount depends on cloud cover. That is why a cool or cloudy-looking day can still have a UV Index that calls for protection.

  • Read the UV number, not just the sky. Visual brightness and air temperature do not substitute for the forecast Index.
  • Check the time window. EPA's maps focus on the predicted value near solar noon, when the sun is highest. Your local clock time for solar noon changes with place and date.
  • Expect location differences. Latitude, elevation, season, ozone, and cloud forecasts all contribute to the predicted UV level.
  • Account for reflection. NWS and EPA both warn that water, sand, and snow can increase exposure by reflecting UV.

A practical pre-trip check

Use four checks before a long outdoor day

  1. Open the location's UV Index. Use EPA's location lookup or the official NOAA forecast map, and note the valid day.
  2. Read the local weather forecast. Clouds, temperature, wind, rain, and thunderstorms affect the schedule and the type of shelter you may need.
  3. Match protection to the plan. NWS recommends shade, protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, UV-blocking sunglasses, and broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen; follow the product label and reapply as directed.
  4. Recheck active alerts. A heat, lightning, or severe-weather warning changes the decision in a way the UV number cannot describe.

For a beach, trail, sports field, job site, or school day, write the UV check into the same routine as the temperature and rain chance. The public forecast is already funded; it should be straightforward to find and use without a subscription or advertising clutter.
