Radar, forecasts, outlooks, watches, and warnings answer different questions
The official NWS radar page can place radar, current weather, alerts, and a forecast in one view. That is useful because the layers are complementary, not interchangeable. Read the label and valid time before using any one layer to make a plan.
- Radar observation
- Shows echoes detected during recent radar scans. A loop shows how those echoes have moved; it is still a sequence of past observations, not a promise of where they will go next.
- Forecast
- Describes expected weather for a place and time. Use the hourly forecast for timing and probabilities, then use radar to see how observed precipitation is evolving.
- Outlook
- Highlights broader potential, often before a specific storm exists. An SPC severe-weather outlook is not a warning and does not mean every place inside a shaded area will be hit.
- Watch
- Means the ingredients for a hazard are possible over an area and period. Review shelter, travel, or outdoor plans and keep monitoring for warnings.
- Warning
- Means a hazard is occurring, imminent, or detected for the warned area. Read the polygon, expiration time, threat, and official action text; do not try to overrule it from one screenshot.
What the colors usually represent
Reflectivity measures returned energy, not a guaranteed rain rate at the ground
Base reflectivity is the common colored layer. NOAA describes it as echo intensity measured in decibels relative to Z, or dBZ. Scientists use reflectivity to detect precipitation, study storm structure, locate boundaries, and assess hail potential. Stronger returns often appear warmer or brighter on a legend, but the legend—not a memorized app color—defines the display.
It may represent light precipitation or another weak target. Compare it with observations and the forecast.
Heavy precipitation or hail may contribute, but reflectivity alone cannot confirm what reaches your exact location.
It can emphasize an intense echo aloft that is not identical to the lowest scan near the ground.
One-hour and storm-total products estimate accumulation; they are different products from base reflectivity.
NEXRAD also detects non-precipitation targets. The national NWS mosaic includes quality-controlled reflectivity with some ground clutter and non-precipitation echoes removed, while the exact filtering and color scale can differ among products and displays. Read the product name and legend every time.
Motion needs context
A loop shows where echoes have been—not an exact arrival clock
Use several frames to see the broad direction and whether echoes are strengthening, weakening, expanding, or breaking apart. Then compare that history with the hourly forecast. Storms can change shape, speed, and direction, so a straight-line extrapolation from one pixel is not an official forecast.
- Check the timestamp. NEXRAD volume scans take several minutes, depending on the scan strategy, and every display also needs time to process and present the data.
- Use more than one frame. A single image cannot show motion, persistence, growth, or decay.
- Watch the whole area. New cells can develop near or ahead of an existing line, outside the path you first traced.
- Keep the warning layer visible. The official NWS radar viewer displays storm-based warnings by default in its national mosaic and station-product views.
- Read the forecast discussion only as support.Radar confirms recent evolution; the forecast explains the expected environment and timing.
Reflectivity is not velocity
Velocity shows motion toward or away from the radar—not ordinary rain intensity
NOAA defines base velocity as the radial component of motion: negative values move toward the radar and positive values move away. On the official product, cool colors represent motion toward the radar and warm colors represent motion away. The result is useful to trained meteorologists for wind, boundaries, severe-weather signatures, and suspected turbulence, but it does not show the full wind vector at every point.
Use this first for the broad footprint and movement of detected precipitation.
The colors are relative to the radar location, not simply “safe” and “dangerous” wind.
The radar algorithm tries to classify rain, snow, hail, biological targets, clutter, and other echoes.
Use the official warning text and polygon for immediate decisions, even when the radar picture looks ambiguous.
Specialized products are not a reason to self-diagnose a tornado, hail size, or flood. Forecasters combine radar with environmental data, reports, and observations. If a warning is issued, act on the warning; if no warning is present, radar colors alone do not create one.
A blank spot is not a safety statement
Missing echoes, offline radars, product choices, and terrain can change the picture
Radar is a remote sensor, not a camera pointed at every street. A blank area can mean no echo was detected on the selected scan, but it can also reflect the product, the radar geometry, terrain effects, filtering, or an equipment outage. NWS recommends comparing a local station with the national mosaic and checking radar status when an image is unexpectedly blank.
- Confirm that the map is centered on your location and that the newest frame is selected.
- Read the product name: base reflectivity, composite reflectivity, velocity, and accumulation are different views.
- Compare the local radar-station view with the national mosaic if a station appears blank or offline.
- Keep the local forecast and active-alert page open; neither disappears because one radar layer is unavailable.
- Use what is happening outside only when it is safe to observe, and never step into a storm to “verify” a pixel.
A two-minute planning routine
Use the forecast for the plan, radar for the update, and warnings for action
- Start with your local NWS forecast. Note the expected window, precipitation probability, temperature, wind, and any thunderstorm wording.
- Check active alerts. Read every outlook, watch, advisory, or warning that covers your route—not only your start point.
- Open radar and verify the time. Select reflectivity for the broad precipitation picture and keep the warning overlay visible.
- Play several frames. Look for the overall direction, growth, gaps, and new development instead of timing one colored edge to the minute.
- Set a decision threshold. Decide what would make you delay, move indoors, change the route, or cancel before you are already exposed.
- Recheck close to departure. Forecasts and alerts can update, and the newest radar frames may show a different evolution than an earlier loop.
