Imagery, radar, forecasts, outlooks, watches, and warnings answer different questions
NOAA satellites observe reflected light and emitted energy from Earth, clouds, and the atmosphere. Radar sends energy and listens for returns from precipitation and other targets. Forecast and alert products add expected conditions, probability, impact, and action. No single layer replaces the others.
- Satellite observation
- A recent image or animation derived from a sensor aboard a satellite. It helps show cloud cover, temperature patterns, moisture features, smoke, dust, or other environmental signals, depending on the selected product.
- Radar observation
- A recent view of echoes detected by weather radar. It is the better starting point for the footprint and motion of detected precipitation near the United States.
- Forecast
- Expected weather for a place and period. Use the local hourly forecast for timing, precipitation chances, temperature, and wind; imagery shows how observations are evolving.
- Outlook
- A broader statement of potential over an area and time window. It is planning information, not a promise that every location will experience the hazard.
- Watch
- Hazardous conditions are possible. Review shelter, travel, or outdoor plans and stay ready for a warning.
- Warning
- A hazard is occurring, imminent, or detected for the warned area. Read the official polygon, expiration time, threat, and action text; a satellite screenshot cannot cancel it.
Visible light needs sunlight
Visible imagery looks familiar—but darkness and cloud shadows matter
NWS describes visible imagery as the view the human eye would see from the satellite. Brightness is largely reflected sunlight, so ordinary visible imagery works best during daylight and the day-night boundary moves across the image. Cloud texture and shadows can help reveal structure, but brightness alone does not equal storm severity.
Use daylight loops to see cloud fields, clearing, boundaries, and the growth of tall clouds.
A dark visible image can simply mean the sun is below the horizon, not that clouds vanished.
Thick clouds often look bright, but snow, ice, or other reflective surfaces can also appear bright.
Cloud shape can be informative; only the official alert tells you whether a watch or warning covers you.
Temperature patterns work day and night
Infrared imagery shows relative warmth—not rainfall at the ground
The NWS infrared display represents relative warmth: colder objects appear brighter, while warmer objects appear darker. High cloud tops are usually colder than low clouds or the surface, which makes infrared useful after dark. The color enhancement is a legend applied to temperature information; it is not a radar-rainfall scale.
- Use it after sunset. Infrared does not depend on reflected sunlight, so it can track cloud features day and night.
- Read the legend. Colors represent ranges in the selected infrared product; different sites can use different enhancements.
- Treat cold tops as a clue. Very cold cloud tops often indicate high clouds, but the image alone does not prove what is reaching the ground.
- Check radar for precipitation. Snow, rain, hail, and non-precipitating cloud cannot be identified safely from one infrared color.
- Check alerts for action. A rapidly cooling cloud top may interest forecasters, but it is not itself a public warning.
Moisture aloft is not surface humidity
Water-vapor imagery highlights atmospheric moisture and circulation—not guaranteed rain
NWS water-vapor imagery uses wavelengths sensitive to water vapor in the atmosphere. Bright or cool-colored areas generally indicate more moisture or ice-crystal influence in the layer sensed by the product; darker or warmer-colored areas indicate less. Forecasters use the patterns to follow moisture and atmospheric circulation.
Broad plumes, dry intrusions, and circulation features can stand out in an animation.
Moisture aloft is one ingredient. Lift, instability, depth, and the local environment also matter.
The product senses a layer of the atmosphere, not the reading from a backyard humidity sensor.
Pair it with the local forecast, radar, observations, and alerts instead of making a street-level decision from the image alone.
Composite products combine information
GeoColor and other enhanced products are interpreted displays—not literal camera photos
The NWS GeoColor product uses a simulated green component to create an approximately true-color daytime view. At night it switches to an infrared combination; blue can represent low liquid-water clouds, while gray or white can indicate higher ice clouds. City lights in that nighttime display come from a static database.
NOAA's current GOES-R satellites carry an Advanced Baseline Imager with multiple spectral channels. Composite products combine selected channels so a particular feature is easier to recognize. That makes them useful, but it also means the colors are a designed interpretation. Read the product description before deciding what a color represents.
A loop still looks backward
Animation shows recent evolution, not an exact arrival time
A satellite loop is a sequence of observations. Use several frames to see the broad motion, growth, decay, and change in cloud patterns. Storms can develop, weaken, merge, or move differently from the simple path you trace, so the loop is not an official forecast clock.
- Verify the newest timestamp. Do not assume the final frame is live merely because an animation is moving.
- Confirm the region. GOES East, GOES West, CONUS, full-disk, and mesoscale sectors cover different areas and update at different rates.
- Read the product name. Visible, infrared, water vapor, and GeoColor are not interchangeable views.
- Use several frames. One still image cannot establish motion, persistence, growth, or decay.
- Keep the forecast and warning open. Those products carry expected timing, confidence, impacts, and action text.
A two-minute planning routine
Use satellite for context, radar for detected precipitation, and warnings for action
- Start with your local forecast. Note the expected window, precipitation chance, temperature, wind, and any hazard wording.
- Check active alerts. Read every outlook, watch, advisory, or warning that covers your destination and route.
- Open the satellite product that answers your question. Visible for daylight cloud texture, infrared for temperature patterns day or night, and water vapor for moisture and circulation aloft.
- Check the time and legend. Confirm that the newest frame is recent and that you know what the colors represent.
- Compare with radar and surface observations. Do not treat cloud cover or cold cloud tops as proof of rain at the ground.
- Recheck before departure. Forecasts and alerts can update; the newest imagery may show a different evolution from an earlier loop.
